Sick carb/ what do ya'll think
I got a sick 44 IDF. runs rich and here is what I found so far.
The fuel is spashing onto the butterfly mostly onto #2 CYLINDER side. I pulled the top off and checked the float setting. Initially it was at 12MM. Don't know why I did this but set it to 10MM like the WEBER book said. As expected the problem got worse. Played with fuel pressure initially 3 lbs down to 1.5 lbs not much change. Pulled top off again set float to 13MM somewhat better still splashing. fuel pressure to 1.5 and still splashing. So I guess I need a new fuel inlet valve. Right. Local flap says they can order a rebuild kit Who else supplies them. Might as well do both sides.

Is the float still floating???
Just an idea... I remember that some of the plasic floats age and the supposedly closed cell foam sucks in gas... Patrick

See thats why you guys are out there. I forgot all about that line of trouble shooting. I'll check it tonight.

Like Patrick says, check the floats. The needle valve seat wears over time and will eventually leak, too, so that rebuild kit may not be such a bad idea.

OK what next
The floats float. excatly the same as the other side. Took it apart too. Rebuild time. Unless somene else has a similar experience I will post when it is fixed.

While you are doing your carb rebuild, could you check on the sizes of jets, emulsion pipe, pumps and venturis??? Just out of curiosity... It also might help me making a decission regarding the carbs I will get for my engine.
Thanks, Patrick

Sure
I am running 50 idle Main gas 185 air, f11 emulsion, 130 gas. pump jet is 55. didn't take the venturi out But a think it is 36MM.
Tough to figure out jets when I can't control the gas spilling over onto the butterflys. Where does this get picked up at? through the idle jets or main gas jetting. |

Yoh!!! -
Saw your reply. Copied this from another of my posts. Hope it helps on your carb dilemma... I am running 44s on my 2.0 engine, stock rebuild but 8.0:1 P/C, MSD CD ignition and Kerry Hunter exhaust. This is for PCR racing. For the street, the 44s are too much carb as I can kill the engine just by flooring below 2500 RPM. I have had 40s as well and they made as much power, except the 44s had a SLIGHT edge at high RPM. But the 40s had DEFINITE better drivability. Plus, with higher intake velocity it will respond better to tuning at idle and part-throttle opening, I think. If mine were a street car, I would stay at 40s. That might change with a non-stock cam and head. Good luck!

I only run 44's on my 2.0's I use a 284 duration cam w- 8.3 to1 and they will pull from 2k but they dont come on until 3k then she blasts to redline. I am going to up the comp to 8.7 to 1 and see how it works with 91 octane gas. Steve
