901 trans lubrication
Just picked up a 73 914 and want to replace the gear lube. I am thinking of using the RedLine Extreme Pressure Gear oil. Has any one had any experience with that gear oil in a 914 transaxle - pro or con?
Other than Swepco, any other suggestions? Thanks, Lee |

I got chewed out by a pro mechanic once for putting Redline MTL in my 914's transmission.
He drained the MTL out as the first step in a rebuild, and told me that he had never seen a transmission in that bad a shape in one piece. He wound up even having to replace the spider gears in the diff. He told me that he used Swepco, and it was the only way they had found to make the 935 transmissions last. Other transmission experts say to use plain generic transmission oil and change it every other year or so. I use Swepco. --DD

I am using Swepco, but there are folks out their that say just use the cheapest oil they sell and the expensive oil is a waist of time in the old box.

Yep, Buy the cheapest Dino oil at the parts store. Works perfect. Synthetics are too slippery for the syncros in a 901.
