The Black Plastic button on the Headlight motor
Somewhere in the past I removed the quarter sized plactic button with a small screw attached to it from the back of the motor.
I have tried & tried to put it back on put for the life of me I cant get the screw threads to start. It's almost like there's something in the hole that wont let it start to screw in. Am I screwy? Thanks. |

Nope. Not reverve Threads. But I have now made it twice as bad.
I unscrewed the ome from the other motor to check the threading. When the screw came out, the Headlight motor fired up and opened the headlamp unit and then closed. ( The ignition was off and there was no power other than passive power from the battery.) Haynes manual has no reference to this happening. I think I triggered a 'manual opening control thingy' and have no idea what to do. The lights still open and close & work perfectly but what the? I hate having left over parts that I know were put there for a reason. Baffled! |

![]() If i remember correctly (and it's been a few years) they are indeed reverse thread. I know i had them off several times but i always managed to get them back on. ![]()

First. Thanks for your help. If your 914 is nearby, you can go out and unscrew them. Lefty Loosey. ( Just don't take them all the way out or you will be in the same Pickle I'm in. They're fine threads but not so fine that I can't find a starting point. Still Baffled. Rick |

You have the only 914 ever produced with right hand threads on those knobs. Mine are left hand threads "lefty tighty", "righty loosy".

The knob is reverse-threaded, but I thought the plastic part was much larger than a quarter. Is it indeed the manual opening knob?
The knob is twisted to open the light up or close it down. (Clockwise to do either.) If the light switch is "off", when the light gets open enough, the closing circuit will take over and cycle the light the rest of the way open and then close it. So the behavior you saw is normal and expected. --DD

My 914 somehow got separated from one of its headlight knobs, so if anyone has one to sell, please let me know.

Word of caution. The motors have a good amount of torque. If you turn the knob all the way one direction it will quickly pop up and down - watch your fingers or you could loose them. (I am not a doctor, but used to play one in grammar school)

Disconnect the battery! For your safety! (or save your fingers)
This will not triggle the motor to turn on and close (back down) the headlight assemly. But please don't quote me on this) For your safety, best way is to cycle it (keep on turning) for couple times to make sure it does not triggle the motor> Turning CCW (Counter Clock wise) - Generally how you UN-screw or UN-thread a fastener- looking right at the HOLE in front of you. People are confused because the headlight motor (hole) is behind the motor and you are standing in front of the motor! Everything tends to get reversed. Unless your face is right behind the knob. The knob has reverse threads on it. Headlight switch off, disconnect the battery. By turnning the knob CCW this will open and close the headlight assembly. It will stop when ever you stop turnning the knob. But when turned a little passed the "peak" point it will change "direction" - Close or open, depends on which posistion you were at. Just keep on turning, it will repeat itself (open and close) You can sort of feel the "weight" pressure change as you turn. By turnning CW, you will loosen the knob from the motor. You can also pull out the HL relays right by the lamps if you do not want them doing the auto up down thing.
I once spent an hour wondering why my lamp would not go up and the other one did, I forgot to plug back in the relay on one side.. Ha Ha on me !
