Carbs w/Chokes
I just got my Dell's in the mail from Italy yesterday. I rebuilt one of them this evening. My question is, they have chokes, I have never heard of anyone talk about Dell's having chokes. Should I make use of them, take them out or what??? Anyone have any experience with this?

My old Weber's never had chokes, but they'd have been nice. When your car is cold, a choke makes starting a hell of a lot easier. Are they automatic (bimetallic coils to open them when the motor is warm) or is it a manual? If they work, I'd keep them.

Looks manual, kinda like a bicycle cable. The routing would be a challenge, so they would have to be a worthwhile addition!!!

JB, I live in Savannah, GA, and the climate here is pretty mild. My 2.0L with Weber 40IDFs runs fine without chokes. It takes only a couple of miles to warm up on cold mornings. But cold here is only 30-40 degrees! I would think you would have even less of a warm up time. Plus Dells are supposed to have superior idle and progression performance compared to Webers. I think I'd install them without a choke linkage and see how it runs.
Good Luck, Mike |

I live in SE Pennsylvania, and my car has 40 IDF's. They have chokes (Actually what Weber calls, an enrichment circuit, another path that provides additional fuel, it doesn't block the air flow like a choke system) They are cable operated, and would require a bellcrank setup to get them to actuate together. Routing a cable up to the dash would be a real PITA, so I've never hooked them up. I've thought about a solenoid actuation, but never followed up on that either. I just let the pump operate a few seconds to ensure the float bowls are full, hit the accelerator pump a couple of times, and it will fire right off. Takes a bit of pumping and fiddling on really cold (low to mid 20's) mornings but not really unreasonable.
