The 914-4 VINs are different from the 914-6 VINs. The only decoding that can be done on the 914-4 ones is as follows: 47Y29SSSSS 47 == 914-4 Y == model year, 0 = 1970, 1 = 1971, etc. 29 == Karmann factory SSSSS == Series within the model year There is no build-in association with paint colors, engine sizes, interiors, etc. The 914-6 VIN decodes as follows: 914Y43SSSS 914 == 914-6 Y == Model year; 0 == 1970, 1 == 1971, 2 == 1972 43 == Porsche factory SSSS == Series number within that model year. To get details of the original configuration of the car, you would have to write to Porsche. For US-spec cars (if your car was imported from the US), you would have to write to Porsche Cars North America and get a "Certificate of Authenticity". They charged $100 for that last I looked; it might be more now. Note that the results are not perfect (the original information is evidently hand-written on index cards) particularly in regards to option codes, but they are about as good as you get unless you can find the original dealer docs from when the car was sold new. --DD

There is also a color code, but that is on a different plate on the doorjamb. If you look at spots they miss on repaints, under the gas tank for example, you can probably figure out the color. You could paint it whatever color if it is a bare shell. I could e mail you the shop manual for it, might make it easier to put back together
