Darn END-PLAY!
Okay guys, I posted about a weekago on th etopic of "end play".
Things are not working out too good for me. I have checked the end play (an old Dial Indicator) with 2 shims and get .15" I then added a third shim, measeured, got a tight .003". I figured that was okay so I installed the new o-ring and new main rear seal...NOW I get little to no movement. I can't feel the flywheel move at all. I didn't add any additional shims after the .003" reading. Arge!!! Any Ideas?? I checked the Dial Indicator by sliding a .015" feeler gauge under the gauge when set at zero and got .015". So the gauge seems to be okay. Thanks ![]()

The end play shims come in five sizes-24, 26, 30, 32, 34. You have to use three shims, not two and definitly not one. the end play should be set to .003 to .004" Always set the end play before you install the flywheel seal, and if it gets tight, hit the pulley with a dead hammer and then zero your guage and hit the flywheel to get your reading. Otto, if the shims don't lay flat on a flat surface, should you not use them?

Okay, so what would cause me to get the different measurements?
Can the seal be removed and reused? It has been installed for, humm... 45 min's. what happens if the endplay is less then .003"?? OTTO, are you saying that arm strength is not enough to check end play? I need to use a hammer? Thanks ![]()

You can use whatever, two screwdrivers or a shot hammer, like we do. Just move the crankshaft from one thrust plane to the other. OTTO

Thanks OTTO.
I hope I figured it out....I rotated the crank untill I found a spot that I could move and measure the end play. I measured .004-.005" by pulling at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and pushing at the center. Thanks for all your help guys. I hope to have some life in this engine by the end of the month. ![]() Kerry ![]()

This might come to late...
You can take the shims out without removing the big oil seal (after removing the oil seal I would not reuse it). It is difficult since the shims tend to stick to each other and to the end of the crank and it might be necessary to make some small hook shaped tools... but it works and it will not harm the oil seal if you are carefully.
