GT reality check
- arguing that there was a single "correct" standard part on all GT's is kinda silly - these were not assembly-line produced
reality check - there was no "standard build sheet" for the GT cars - they were all purpose-built for racing in FIA group 3 or 4 and some parts were available and suggested per the "competition parts list" - all on specific order by customers who most likely put up the cash before they were built Actual title of the list is "Information Regarding PORSCHE Vehicles Used for Sports Purposes" " 911 S 914/6 From Model 1970) " Porsche part number 4890.20-200-03-72 (second edition) and the embedded "Porsche 914-6 M-471 Competition Parts List" TYP 914/6 Edition March 1970 - Best. Nr. 6o24.14 beyond that, all race cars of the period were built to fit the size & shape and personal preferences of the selected drivers and intended race venues - witness that all of us who have these cars all have somewhat different components in/on them depending on who built them and for what original "sports venues" intended . an intersting side-bar: note that Porsche itself intermingled the 914-6 with 914/6 designation in their official publications " |

Varying degrees of conversions done to 914-6 cars following the Porsche factory defined 914-6 GT "basic" specifications. I refer to the "basic" GT specification the inclusion of most of the following GT factory parts; 906 Twin-Plug 2.0 Liter Racing Engine Password Protected Image, Endurance Racing Oil-Cooling System 914-6 GT Parts - Photo 11 photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com including a front mounted BEHR Oil-Cooler 1970 Porsche 914-6 GT Front Mounted Oil-Cooler - Photo 1 photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, some GT cars were equiped with a larger 100 liter fuel tank Miles Collier 914-6 GT 100 Liter Tank.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com - 914-6 GT 100 Liter Fuel Tank - Photo 01 photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com requiring significant modifications to addapt it to the front trunk of the 914 see here GT Shock Tower Reinforcement Photo Gallery by 914-6 GT at pbase.com 908 Front Calipers 908 Brake Caliper installed in the Kremer 914-6 GT photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com - 908 Calipers - Photo 1 photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com and Vented Rotors, 914-6 rear calipers 914-6 GT Rear Calipers Feb2005 Photo 1.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com spaced for vented rotors BN 914-6 GT 103.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, Rear Chassis Steel Reinforcement Kit BN 914-6 GT 102.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com - scalli74 photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, Koni Dual Externally Adjustable Competition Shocks GT Koni Rear Adj Shocks 022.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com with GT Racing Rear Springs and spring-hats 914-6 GT Rear Racing Springs - pn 914.333.531.08 Green-White photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com (available in varying spring rates according to color code 914-6 GT Rear Racing Springs - pn 914.333.531.09 Blue-White photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com), Factory Steel Fender Flairs 914-6 GT Steel Fender Flares NOS 004.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, Balsa Wood Reinforced Front Serrano - 914-6 GT Front Trunk Lid NOS - Photo 2 photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com & Rear 914-6 GT Rear Trunk Lid NOS - Photo 1 photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com Fiberglass Trunk Lids, Front GT Front Bumper & Valance 001.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com and Rear 914-6 GT's Photo Galleries at pbase.com - 914-6 GT's Photo Galleries at pbase.com Bumpers and Rocker-Panels GT Fiberglass Rocker Panels Photo Gallery by 914-6 GT at pbase.com made of a light Fiberglass, specially designed and lighter (and not very comfortable!) I may have missed a few other GT components, but the majority of the 914-6 GT race cars appear to have been equipped as such. After leaving the Porsche factory, their new owners added even more modifications to the cars including; roll-bars Tour de France Automobile XV Sonauto #121 914-6 GT 16.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, different sway-bar configurations Strahle 914-6 GT - Sway-Bar Installation Inside Rear Trunk - Photo 22 photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, 100-Liter Fuel Tanks, additional reinforcements such as in the area of the "Dog-Ear" at the rear suspension 914-6 GT "Dog-Ear" Suspension Reinforcement, a weak point of the suspension with wider wheels and tires photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, the front windshield posts Collier 914-6 GT - Windshield Frame Reinforcements photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, etc.), Mechanical Headlight Raisers Nurburgring #2 914-6 GT Miles Collier 038.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com eliminating the heavier electrical motors which actuate the retractable headlights (further lightening these cars), rear jacking-point supports 914-6 GT "Quick Jacking Point" Modification / Reinforcements photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com, and further engine enhancements to improve performance in an effort to make the 2.0 liter engines of the GT's more competitive. For these reasons, there are probably no two 914-6 GT cars that were exactly alike... Keep in mind that the Porsche factory did not have a "specific must-have list" of parts to convert a 914-6 factory car to the GT specification, but rather, they created approximately 400 "GT Kits" which were later made available to anyone wishing to upgrade their 914-6 cars for competition use. Depending on the event the GT was to be entered, the appropriate parts were then installed or removed from this so called "GT Kit". Between 1970 and 1971, the factory did initially built a number of 914-6 GT race cars (that number is between 33 to 38 cars) and these 914s later became more commonly known as the "factory-built" cars. Please note some common parts used on most of the small amount of true Porsche built GT cars. Pbase is a fantastic resource for information and photo documentation. Badm |

Now every day I see this work and have a lot of questions !!!! the firts is : with de fuchs wheels what size of the tires mount ???? Thank you and very good job !!! |
If you want the correct color of the green 914-6 why don't you contact the current owner who is Steve Limbert.
He runs a shop in PA known as Aircooled Racing. He made a clone of that car and it may even be for sale. BTW, I owned the #5 J. Duval car that won the 1971 GTU class at the 24 of Daytona. Believe it when people say that each car was built differently. I've got a facimile of the build sheet for my 914-6 GT which I'd be happy to share with you if you'd like.It comes complete with part#'s and descriptions in both English and German. Tom B. |
7 and 8 x 15". ;)

Tom, I would love a copy.

Goodyear Bluestreaks 6.00
|
My car for example came with Fuchs in the front and Minilites in the rear.
Don't ask me why, but just a further example of how different each was. Yes the Blue streaks were also the tires on my car.Still available from Goodyear. Tom B. |
Sorry for my english, is little but I search the size of the front and rear tires combination not the manufacturer.
|
Minilite's were used because the offset on the factory 8s was less than ideal. They leave about 1.5" on the inside and come close to the fender. Most cars with larger tires on the rear have been pulled.
|
Eric...et al.....I think jm993rs is asking a question I have also....
What size tires are most of you using on your 7 and 8 x 15 Fuchs rims for a street 914-6 GT also the sizes for race would be interesting to know... Thanks |
Those are the Bluestreak sizes. 15" 5.50 up front and 6.00 in the rear. You REALLY need to make sure the 6.0's fit before you paint etc. The flares need to be pulled to meet those specs. The Lufthansa car has 6.00's all the way around as an example.

wheels fitted in Germany
Remember - this was 1970-72 - there were very few wide wheel options in those days, and even fewer wide/low tire options
a car built in Germany that received TUV approval for road registration had to have optional wheels and alternate tire sizes approved by TUV - a pure Race car, never TUV registered, could have had anything the owner-racer wanted and could afford - but it would still have had to comply with the tire/wheel rules of the race venue in Germany, in 1972, my car was fitted with 4 7.5x15" Steel wheels - they were very lightweight, very special - only about 1/2 the weight of any steel wheel you have ever lifted - - they accepted the old style porsche chrome hubcap - I have the original TUV certifaction documentation - (probably a rarity among the GT's still in existence today) you can see them on the car, in Germany - here - larrym's Garage :: Sixer -- - wish I still had them, but they got left behind during a divorce and likely went to a scrap yard |
