For five-bolt wheels, you need 911 hubs. To install those, you need 911 struts. Those can be installed on the 914's A-arms and chassis. The 911 brakes would go along with the struts--the 914 would use the brakes from that particular 911.

You'd want new shock absorbers, new wheel bearings, new ball joints (with the appropriate attachment), rebuilt brake calipers, new rubber brake hoses (or possibly stainless-steel braided hoses). Used parts would be less expensive, but those are all wear items so it's better to replace them.

No, the flywheel that is used with the 915 gearboxes (1972 and later 911s) does not really fit in the 901 gearbox. You need a 914-6 flywheel, which is the same as a 1969 911T flywheel. I think all of the 911 flywheels up through 1969 will actually work, but I am not quite certain.

What calipers and disk brakes would you use in the rear ?

Dave at Pelican Parts 06-14-2012 08:13 AM

Depends on a bunch of things.

The easiest would be to use the stock 914 rear calipers over solid rotors. If you need vented rotors in the back, Eric Shea at PMB Performance can set you up with stock 914 rear calipers with a spacer in the middle to go over the thick vented rotor.

People have adapted 911 rear brakes to the 914 trailing arms, including ways to keep the hand-brake functioning. A search here will probably turn up info on that.

If you don't need a hand-brake at all, you can use the stock 914 front brakes on the rear over solid rotors. You can also make the 911 rear brakes work without including the hand brake part.

And, of course, there are places like Wilwood that make a huge number of different brake setups that can be made to work.

If you're going for a duplicate of the 914-6 GT, I'm not sure what they used. Probably different cars used different setups, but I'm not even certain about that. Check the web site I linked to early in the thread for pictures of what the GTs used, and also talk to Eric Shea (again). "Real GT" or replica of the real GT options are likely to be some of the more expensive ones.

Where are you going to use the 914...street or track?

donporfi 06-14-2012 09:49 AM

Street and DE.
But if you upgrade the fronts the rears should be upgraded also.

jm993rs 06-14-2012 11:55 AM

thank you guys !!!!

For the rear whells I have prepared :

The oem hubs with worked to 5 screws, the oem brake disk thins with the work of the 5 holes and with a pair of oem 914-4 front calipers and I not need standard hand brake because I mount one racing hydraulic hand brake.

And for the front I have :

One new pair of drilled 911 brake disk, one pair of 911 sc front calipers, and the oem 911 hubs with the five screws, and I would mount because I thinking have all parts.

Yes !!! Is not the best combination but, when the car are finished, and the engine start Ok, and all of prts works step by step make more modifications, for me the problem is the money, and need go step by step.

Time for mount and dismount for me is not a problem, because I make all with my hands,

I would mount 4 bilsteins front and rear ¡, because I have time, first for me is more important the combination of the money for the car can work !!!

then, to mount the hubs of 911 with the 5 screws, I need the struts of 911?

the struts oem of the 914-4 are little ???

You need 911 struts to mount the 911 hubs and brakes.

Hydraulic hand-brakes don't work reliably. At least, not if you set them when you come off the track with nice hot brakes, and then they cool down. Chocks (triangles, often of wood, that you put on the ground to keep the tires from rolling) are fine for race cars. Not so good for street cars.

thank you Sr Dave !!!!

The car is only for make racing of regularity and track days, I not search make exactly clone of 914-6 GT.

I search make and have one early auto for racing days but without spending a fortune.

what do you think about the dash refurbished ????

Dave at Pelican Parts 06-14-2012 03:43 PM

The dash looks good! I might consider using a 911 oil temp and pressure gauge instead of the 914 combo gauge, but you'll have to either get a fuel gauge or make room to use the 914's fuel gauge somewhere if you do that.

mepstein 06-15-2012 12:39 PM

I'm pretty sure I see an oil pressure gauge on the dash but I agree with Byron, I'd like to see more. Looks great!!!

jhora 06-15-2012 03:34 PM

Sorry friends !!!!

what I'm looking for this struts ????

Porsche 911 1965-1989 914 1970-1976 Front Struts 3 inch Used On Sale Set of 2 | eBay

Scrappy 06-17-2012 05:40 AM

Those struts are equivalent to a stock 914/6 ... 3" caliper mounting spread or "M" calipers.

If you have SC calipers, "A" or "S" calipers, you need 911 struts with 3.5" caliper mounting spread.

Exciting to see your progress and a small world as well! The car you are replicating is currently sitting above mine as it mine is being restored. Car looks amazing in person!

Smaller world... I work with the guy that restored the car you're replicating. I had really wanted to build a GT but was scared off by the process and price.
