New Build Start-up Problem
I just completed a new build of my 74 914 2.0L engine.
Stock oil pump tested before installation. Vaseline packed to help prime the system. Stock cam. Added oil pressure gauge along with pressure switch. Turn over engine without spark plugs after about a minute to minute and a half dummy light goes out. The only thing is I do not read any pressure on the gauge. Installed spark plugs and started to turn over the engine without fuel to verify again. Dummy light is back on and turn over for about 30 seconds and it still will not go out. No oil leaks anywhere! What could the issue be? I have been over as much as I could without starting to tear down the engine. Maybe check the pressure reliefs? Could I have installed the relief piston backwards? Could this cause this type of issue? Thanks in advance, Scott |

What is the oil level? My neighbor did this to a very nice VW bus many many years ago and even though the oil light stayed on, kept the revs high (> 2500) and drove around the block. As he pulled into the driveway the engine seized and he saw the cans of oil on the work bench! Are the gauge and switch matched I.E. did they come as a set? If they are VDO they should be together. You can try pulling the pressure switch on top of the engine and crank it to see it oil comes out. Be sure to put a big drip pan underneath first. You could pull a valve cover to see if oil has got to the heads and in 30 seconds if the pump is okay you'll have oil at both places.

Oil level running between both marks on the dipstick. I am running Brad Penn break-in oil.
Gauges are not matched. I will pull the valve covers today and if nothing I might attach a hose to the pressure switch port. If all fails here I might start pulling the reliefs. Thanks, Scott |

i'd certainly check the gauge before i did any tear down again. the idiot light goes off from pressure so i'd suspect you're getting some.
I have a mechanical gauge I'd use to verify.

Using a mechanical gauge pressure exists but very low around 2-3 psi. It is hard to tell exactly due the the scale and accuracy of the gauge. Also verified oil coming from the pressure switch port as I turn over the engine. Very little though.
Should I be worried and not start the motor until the pressure is much higher? |

something doesn't sound right. If the pressure relief piston was backwards it could block flow i'm thinking
Oil pickup tube was sealing well into the case? could the vaseline be blocking the oil from getting to the pump or does it just dissolve into the oil? I'd make sure it's assembled correctly and perhaps then start it and watch closely the pressure. It was lubed on assembly so it should be ok for the 30 seconds or so without damage. I would hope you don't have to tear it down again.

After much review I have found the problem!
The pressure relief piston was backwards with the cup end first. I turned the pressure relief piston around and after two attempt to turn over the engine pressure jumped up to 10 psi. Third turn over achieved 20+. It is a nice feeling! Thanks, Scott |
