Cylinder and Head Separation
When unbolting the head from the block the #4 cylinder came off with it. I tried WD-40 and light prying but can't get the cylinder seperated from the head.
Any advice/ideas please. |

i use 3 in 1 oil and tapping with a hammer for loosening nuts and bolts that have been on for a long time sometimes the night before to let it soak in i use wd40 just to oil threads when assembling for some nuts and bolts Last edited by rapid transit; 12-28-2011 at 10:24 PM.. |

From a bad experience I can suggest you gently tap around the cylinder with a soft hammer after WD'ing it overnight. Don't be tempted to use any leverage on the cooling vanes. They will snap and in my opinion these engines need all the cooling they can get.

By using a dead blow mallet or even a rubber mallet, if that's all you have, smack the cylinder at different 180 degree positions.
I have recently read a home made test on different penetrants and wd_40 was the least effective. Power blaster and liquid wrench performed better but the best was a homemade brew with acetone and auto trans fluid. I think I read this at bobistheoilguy.com. But I admit I have the wd-40 in the garage. Hope this helps, Bill |

Thanks everyone.
The PB blaster and rubber mallet worked. Now to split the case. I counted 24 nuts including the 6 big ones. I've read both 24 and 26 total fasteners. Does anyone know how many there are? My case seems like it's still bolted together. What's this star bolt in the picture for? ![]() |

It's for one of the oil pressure control pistons.
I don't remember the number of nuts/bolts, but the answer for "I can't separate the case" is almost always "You forgot a nut!" The most popular ones to forget: - In between the pushrod tubes on the right side of the engine. - Behind the flywheel. - Under the oil pump, covered in crud. - On the bottom of the engine, also covered in crud. --DD

i smacked all my bolts out . there is a nylon sleve on them that may or may not be restricting your movement. i just did it to eliminate the possibility of them holding me up. came apart pretty easy actually

Watch the "Bug Me" video and finally got the case split. I pryed between the fan hub and case as shown in the video and the case came apart. Good thing too cause I was starting to go crazy following the case seam with a flashlight looking for a missed fastener.
New question: Does anyone know if engine shielding/tin color affects cooling performance? ![]() |
