914 Distributer
I have a 74 914 2.0 and just changed the cap, rotor, Points and wires. The car starts fine but has no power. It runs without back firing but wont rev above 3000 rpm. I do not know where to start and would appreciate any help.

Double-check the dwell angle and the timing.

Okay so this morning I adjusted the dwell by ear (if that is possible) and for the most part the car ran really well, but later in the day is started giving me trouble; Sputtering and no power so I bout a meter and tested the Dwell. It was at 34. I adjusted it to 47.9 and checked that it did not deviate +- 1 degree at 2000 rpm. Took it for a drive and it had no power. Then I tool it down to 44.5 and drove it again - still no power. So finally, I adjusted it to 34 and it runs well enough to take it to a shop, which I was trying to avoid) but nonetheless I am stumped. I made sure the connections were correct and the settings on the meter were correct. Any final suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any time you change the dwell, you change the timing. You have to re-time the ignition after adjusting the dwell.

You may want to double check your ignition wires. You can reverse them and the car still starts okay but you won't have the power.

4-3-1-2 and if you don't have any clue what you are doing the shop is the best place to fix it. before you completely ruin a motor. |
