Fuel Tank connections. 75 2.0 FI

It's a month or so since I pulled the fuel tank to de rust and POR15 the inside and I am now a bit confused with the re connections.
I marked the lines when I took it apart but if I reconnect the same way it seems the return line is going into the fitting with the gauze filter inside the tank.
I would have thought the gauze inside the tank was a coarse filter sending fuel to the main filter and the return line would just go stright back into the tank.
It may have been hooked up incorrectly by a PO or maybe I have got it wrong.
can anyone put me straight on this one?
Thanks

The sock filter should be on the line to the pump.

Thanks Dave. So it makes me wonder how the car ran with the fuel coming via the smaller return line. We thought it was running lean but I am sort of surprised it ran at all?

As long as the fuel gets to the pump it should run, so there's no surprise there for me. The main thing is that it might starve earlier depending on how far up or down the tops of the fittings are in the tank, and debris in the tank is more likely to get stuck in the main fuel filter or block the lines somewhere.
