camshaft
replacing my camshaft on my rebuild and need to know the torque on the bolts and also how to time the cam to the gear . do you time it like a VW where you line up the split on the front of the cam with the dot on the gear or is there some other way.
Thanks |

If cam manufacturer gives no data on torque for cam bolts, check on internet for torque on 12.9 or whatever the marking on the bolt head indicates per its diameter. Use read loctite.
From memory, turn crank until the dimple is close to the case split towards the cam. The crank gear mark should between the two marked teeth on the cam gear.

There are dots on the cam gear teeth and the crank gear teeth. There is one dot on a single tooth of the cam gear, and one dot on each of two adjacent teeth of the crank gear. Put the single dot in between the two dots, and you're done.
The dot is visible in about the 3:30 position in the following photo: ![]() Original cam gears are riveted on, so there is no factory torque spec. Use whatever spec is correct for the size of bolt that you are using. (Google "torque M6 bolt" or M8 or whichever the size is.) Use bolts with short heads, and loc-tite them in. If the bolts are too tall or if they back out, they will start to machine the inside of your case. --DD

When bolting a new camshaft to the camshaft timing gear hold the gear so the dot on the gear is at
12 o’clock. As you mate the camshaft to the gear the farthest lobe on the other end of the camshaft will be pointing down at 6 o’clock. |
