914-6 clone - what the heck is it worth?
I have a chance to buy a car that has been sitting for quite a while... 5+ years ago, this thing dominated SCCA solo. it has been set up as a driver/AutoX.
Here is what I know. The 4cyl car is vin # 4732912581 and a wrecked 6 cyl car was purchsed about 12 years ago and everything from that car was rebuilt to make this car a 6cyl. The 6cyl vin # is 9140430856. The seller has the title to both the 4cyl and the 6cyl donor car along with the vin plate from both cars and he actually cut the vin number off the passenger fender of the 6cyl car... so for some reason he has this too. My guess is someone along the way was going to attempt to retag this thing as a 6. The engine is a correct 641 2 ltr block with receipts that show that he had S pistons installed. The carbs are the right 914-6 webers and were just rebuilt after setting for about 2 years without being started. The car starts and runs great now. I know it has the right oil cooler, the right guages, the right engine mount. It has a 914-4 side shift. I has headers with an odd exhaust that dumps out the back but it has a side tailpipe as well?? There is not a bit of rust anywhere on the car. It is filthy, it has sit for a while in a bodyshop but the signal orange paint looks absolutly great from what I can tell. It has different brakes than a 914-4 but I dont know if they are 914-6 brakes or 911 brakes? What could this thing be worth cleaned up and running perfect on new rubber? I can get the car for $7k and I'm just interested in flipping it... Can't have any more long term toys right now! Any ideas on value? If you can pick that car up for $7K, I don't see how you could possibly lose. Then parts alone are worth that. Please post the full engine number as the 641 engine would be correct for a '71 and not a '70.

7K is a steal. Those look like aluminum 911S calipers on the front wheels.

This car comes up for sale at least once a year and it is talked about extensivly on 914world.com!
The problem is you cant search there if there is a number in the search peramiters so I cant find the thread! I will keep looking for it! There can't be much of the 6 body left since the seats are both adjustable so it would be considered a conversion! But even a conversion is worth $7K or more in that kind of shape! |

do you know how to look for a rust on a teener?
pull the rocker covers if you haven't already if its rust free its a good deal but I've seen running conversion cars sell for 7-10K in the past with bigger motors still a good deal though if it runs. |

I've owned a few of these and know where to look for the rust, it is clean as can be. Brought it home today and got it running. It sounds incredible. I know... Big difference between what I bought it for and my asking price.
The guy selling the 914 got the car when he purchased a restoration shop with about 8 cars along w the shop. The 914 was the only non muscle car in the mix... The guy really wanted nothing to do w a German car and needed cash and freed up space. It is a hell of a car. |
6 conversion
One helluva nice conversion. The body looks indredible and even though it's a smaller motor this was an absolute steal at $7K. I think you should just enjoy it for a while...who know's you might just want to keep it forever! I wish I had enough extra cash to pick this one up. The color fantastic!

The market is strong for Real -6s, but still pretty soft for conversions. I hope that you are negotiable or you may sit on it awhile |
I've seen quite a few conversions go in the 10 -12 range lately.

I have accepted an offer on the car and going through the purchase process - I'll repost if something falls through.
I'll suggest the new owner post the engine serial number as requested... I think he is interested in putting a 3.0 in this little monster. |
If he swapped the engine over from a wrecked 6, the original owner isn't an issue. $7K was a steal. I have that into my conversion so far and it's still up on jackstands.

Two concerns...first the VIN#. Was the /6 swapped over? If so, that is a Bozo No No in every state.
On the steering column and ignition....they differ on the /6. The pics show the oem for /4. |
