914-6 Remote Oil Cooler and Thermostat
I own a 1970 original 914-6. My car is stock, narrow fenders, original interior, and correct color. The only modification I made was the installation of an air conditioning from a 4 cylinder 914 some years ago. I plan to keep the car as original as possible.
My engine needs a overhaul and I plan to up-grade to S specs, about 180 HP. For this power and with the air conditioner I need some extra cooling. I plan to do a similar installation as on the 911 S, or RS cooper tubing ( I can make it no problem) and a trombone. I do not want to modify the body to install a front oil cooler a la GT. The big question is which thermostat I can use, and on which side of the body fix the installation? The thermostat of a 914 GT, is our of my $$$ power, a normal 911 3.2, or a 964 thermostat are in my opinion the logical choice. Now the 911 3.2 thermostat have 4 connections and the 964 have five. What is the use of the 5th one? Does any one had performed a similar conversion? Comments please???? Thanks in advance Francisco |

I used a Mocal thermostat on my 3.0 conversion. It is a four hose unit, I plumbed it with AN -12 hose it works great. If you don't want to modify the body for the traditional oil cooler in the front you can mount a fan assisted unit in the passenger side rear quarter panel in front of the wheel. Your oil hose length will be short saving money.

![]() ![]() The 914-6 Oil lines & fittings are M26x1.5. I have all the correct Metric fittings you need and can supply the correct Oil hose as well. Please see attached photo. ![]() I have done these for a number of restoration shops and would be happy to help you with this. Len at Autosportengineering dot com ![]() |

my car came from Germany with a 911 thermostat -
similar current version of that unit is 964-207-047-08-M322 Oil Thermostat, - in the Pelican catalog - my cooler is an oem GT Behr, lines go up the left side as you can see in old GT pictures my engine oil temp stays around 190 F unless i get stuck in rush hour traffic

Thanks for the answers and details. For sure I will look for a Troutman thermostat. Appreciate the offer on the oil lines, I will be back on this one.

I also recommend the Troutman thermostat.
FYI, the trombone oil cooler will not be effective on a car with A/C. I highly suggest putting an finned oil cooler, even in the rear if needed. |
