Vacuum hose sizes
I'm about to replace my vacuum hoses so I checked the diagram right underneath Dave's Fuel Injection Diagram. The sizes and lengths are listed underneath the hose diagram. What puzzles me is that 13, 10, 8, 5, and 4 mm ID are listed as the sizes required but PP sells 14, 12, 9, 7, 5, and 3.5 mm ID hoses (5 mm being the only size listed as both needed and carried by PP). Are the sizes called for correct? Do I need to look elsewhere for the sizes other than 5mm? can I use 3.5 in place of 4? 14 or 12 instead of 13? etc. Any other tips on hose replacement? My current hoses don't all go exactly where the diagrams say they should go but the car runs great. Leave well enough alone? (Don't fix it if it ain't broke?) Waddaya think?

When I did our 1974 2.0l a year or so ago I bought the hose at NAPA. They were the only place tohave metric sizes. If they don't have a size I would go slightly smaller and make sure you use all new hose clamps where needed. Good luck.

I had the same questions when I re-hosed my 2.0L last year. In the end I purchased a hose kit that was, simply put, the right solution. The kit had all the right hose sizes, pre-cut to the correct length, and a very easy to follow installation diagram. Some folks question the quality of the hoses, but they appeared to be the same German OEM cloth-braided hose that I replaced. After a year they still look new.
I really-really wish PP would put these types of no-brainer kits together, but they don’t. I refuse to admit where I got the kit wink-wink nudge-nudge ![]()

Tim -
One of the projects I'm planning is for my 2.0 to get "hosed". Would you care to share where you got your kit? Or, better yet. Maybe DD can convince his employer to put together a kit that has all the right hose sizes, pre-cut to the correct length, and a very easy to follow installation diagram. |

I don't beleeve yous guys...
This board is full of weekend wrenches (and pros) who routinely rebuild 911 engines, play with induction customization, rebuild transaxles, suspension swaps and on and on... Why are we even suggesting to Wayne and Tom that they precut vac hoses and give us an installation diagram...what next, a premeasured motor oil kit with a funnel? If its that important to you...why not come up with your own Vac hose Tech Article with diagramsm and photos...I am sure they would at least post it to the site. |

Because the name of the game is service. If they were to provide me a hose kit, that would be great service. And, I reward people who provide good service with my money. Otherwise, I'll just go to my local NAPA and buy the pieces separately.

Point well made and I am sure some would buy it...but given the effort to stock/cut/package that kit, PP would need to pay someone to do that and it would come down to paying say $40 for hoses from flaps or $60 in a kit plus shipping.
914 owners in particular are price sensitive as is well known... $20 bucks to a 914 owner is alot. |

To get back to Tom's original question...
Charlie Davis has a Hose Diagram on his site that may help to clear things up (or it may confuse the matter more). According to Charlie, his diagram "is different than the one Dave Darling has on the Pelican Parts site. My drawing is better than Dave's...I spelled "Oil" correctly...I used the correct hose sizes...and most importantly, I exercised some taste in choices of color!" Charlie lists the size hoses that Tom says that Pelican stocks. |

I had the same deal with hoses. Didn't want to call "&&" wink, wink, so I measured them and converted everything to standard sizes, just slightly smaller than the original metric sizes.
13mm = 1/2" 10mm = 3/8" 8mm = 5/16" 5mm = 3/16" 4mm = 1/8" Keith

Here is the thread from the last go around. Read it and you’ll see where the kit comes from. Just remember not to gamble with money you can’t afford to loose.

The sizes listed on the diagrams are the sizes of the fittings. That's what was easy to measure, so that's what I measured. The hose ends had already stretched to that size, so measuring them wasn't gonna tell me anything else... You want something smaller than that to hold the fitting and not leak.
I've talked to Wayne about the kit idea, and he told me that it simply was not economically viable. We'd have to work out all of the permutations of hoses (there are at least 8 that I know of!!), buy all of the hoses, pay someone to measure and cut and package them, and then keep them on hand until someone ordered them. All of that costs money--which would have to be passed on to the customer. So, would you guys pay $90 for a bunch of hose you could get for $40 at NAPA? What about $75? $60? If any of you guys want to make up kits like this, please feel free to! How hard can it be to sit around your shop/garage, cutting hoses to length? Just make sure you have a nice talk with Jeff Bowlsby about the economics of small-run production first. --DD

What about your thoughts on changing to the diagram vs. reconnecting the hoses the way they are now, seeing as how the car has been running fine with the hoses the way they are for the 3 years I've owned it and however long they've been that way for the PO.

First, as much as I like Pelican, their prices on hoses are 3X higher than my local German auto parts discounter. They charged me $2-3 per meter whereas Pelican is charging $2-3 per foot.
I got a ruler, used Chucks map printed out on a color printer as a guide and got an approximation of how much of each size of hose I would need. It took 10 minutes to figure it out. Pelican could easily provide the service of a full kit by just telling people what to buy. I mean instead of prepackaging a kit, they could just say, for example, "if you have a '74 2.0 you should order X feet of 12mm, X feet of 8mm, etc." |
