Lobro axles-equal or unequal?

Would anyone know whether or not the rear axles on a 914 with a 915 gear box should be equal in overall length or unequal.
I ask becuase when I took out the transmission the passenger side axle cleared the stub axle easily but the drivers side axle would not clear as I attempted to move it out of the way.
I later discovered that each axle was marked left and right but where installed on the wrong side (ie: left on the passenger side and right on the drivers side).
I've tried measuring them on the bench side by side but I'm not getting consistent dimensions.
Thanks,
Tom B.

note many 914 bodies can be found to be loopsided, accidents, repairs and factory tolerances all can add up. distorted engine/tranny mounts can also shift stuff around.

Easy, loosen the trailing arm bolts on the tight side. Whala. You probably needed an alignment anyway.

I finally got a good measurement and one is definately longer than the other....so I think if I was to put them on the side as originally marked they will probably be OK.

As far as I know, they "should" be symmetrical. If yours are not, that is likely a symptom of some Very Weird Engineering (TM) in order to get the 915 trans to hook up to the 914 trailing arms.

This is on the Dave Evans purple 914. It was (past tense) a CA car so you might be familiar with it.

If you know the car, Dave appeared almost anal about detail and did in fact re-engineer numerous things on the car. I think trailing arms were one of those.

At this point I will just assume there is a reason. As long as I don't percieve a safety issue I'll just re-install them after fully repacking the CV joints and crack checking the shafts.
