Temp Guage

Where should the needle be on the temp gauge. As a newbie owner not sure exactly where it should be. Mine seems to run about 3/4 of the way up. Not to the red zone but closer than I think it should. Have only run it about 30 minuets at a time. If it is running hot, where should I begin to look for a problem

my experience with the oil guage shows that 3/4 full scale is near 250F, way too hot for oil in my opinion. mine was checked agianst a calibrated thermocouple wire stuck down the dipstick hole, near straight up is about 212F
of course you may have a fault in the system , or have missmatched sendor, / gauge. Id get the temps confirmed, and if you are really at 250F, you need to address the problem

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try and get an accurate reading on the oil temp.

I put mine in boiling water, 3/4 way up was ~212F. There is a temperature reading on the far right, hidden from site.

I use my gauge as well as a Mainely dipstick thermometer for comparison but also found some pictures of gauges with the temps on another site this a.m. (reading an oil temp gauge - 914club.com)

And don't forget that there are quite a number of aftermarket senders that also fit directly where the stock one does, and they could be calibrated for different ranges.

If you really want to be sure of what readings your gauge and sender give you, the best thing is to hook them up and check with boiling water. Or maybe with cooking oil and a frying thermometer.
