Starter Switch
I am at figure 7 replacing the starter switch in my '74 914. The instructions say"also disconnect the hex head bolt that holds the steering column housing". My 7 mm wrench spins and my 8 mm won't go in. If I drill the bolt out what will I hit? If I remove the wiper and turn switch assembly, is it possible to change the start switch with the column in place?

I am now frustrated to the max. I can find nothing wrong with the switch. Symptoms. Yesterday with the car parked in the sun, turning the key produced no result. No alternator light,no oil light and no fuel gauge. Needless to say no start cranking either. I placed an ice pack on the lock and after about 30 minutes the lights and fuel gauge would come on. After 15 minutes more the starter would crank and the engine would fire. I drove home and removed the start switch. No cracks. Nothing wrong. What is going on? I cannot always park where I can find Ice. Is it the switch or the lock? Help
