I assume you mean the front .... you aren't just going to pull a bolt to remove it.
You will remove at least 5 before you can remove it.

There are 4 plus removal of the lower shock bolt. The 3 hold alignment shims underneath them. The 4th is on the ear opposite the 3 and is a 22 mm(?) nut. The shock bolt you can see also. You also need to disconnect / remove the caliper (2 bolts). Remove the brake line clips and set it free.
And I forgot, you have to remove the drive axles too! They all have to be removed to remove the "trailing arm".

Please post some pics. I have a bum knee and want to convert to an automatic. I have been told by "experts" that it is too expensive and can't be done. I am looking for some inspiration! Thanks!

Anything can be done, if you throw enough money and ingenuity at it.
There's a guy on the 914world BBS who has a four-cylinder 914 with an older Audi FWD auto transmission in it. A few parts of it look a little hack-ish, but he says it works reasonably well. That is probably the easiest one to do; I think the transmission bolt pattern may be the same, though that's relatively minor. But a longitudinal FWD gearbox means it turns the correct direction and stays in the stock location, both of which are less work than otherwise. --DD
