Wonderful World of Timing a 914...
I don't know how it is done! Hold the timing light, set the remote tach in a visible area, hold the mirror to see the marks and rev the engine to 3500 RPM. Ugh.
While I was searching around with the mirror, I looked at the front of the fan, next to the firewall. I saw a degree scale. Is this normal? I haven't heard of anyone else talking about this and didn't see it in the archives. Here's a picture. You can see the mark on the pulley is real close to 27deg BTDC. My car originally came with EGR and an air pump. |

That's what I was wondering! I thought I read somewhere that it was on a bus or something. I know my case is a GC case at least..... I'll try ShopTalkForums.
When I finally get up to your place with it (on a weekend) I'm going to have you look at it. I haven't messed with trying to check the timing for a couple of days. |

The timing scale does look like those found on buses. Some time ago I took one from a salvaged bus, along with the cooling fan and the molded black plastic screen which protects the fan intake. I never did use the parts but intend to fit the screen next time the engine is out.

Yeah, one of those plastic screens is on my to get list. I have already sucked the heater booster hose into the fan late at night. Boy, the engine oil heats up pretty quick when the fan plugs up! Also, sucked a shop rag into the fan my son left in the engine compartment. That just blocked it without eating it.
