You don't specify if you have a tail or side shifter. I have a tail shifter. I'm not sure what you mean by heavy noise but after I replaced all of my bushings (including lubing them) and other related plastic parts, shifting was very stiff. For whatever reason I discovered that by putting several small spacers under the shifter, raising it slightly took care of the issue. Apparently the shift rod was binding somewhere. I guess it is also possible that you are slightly out of adjustment in your linkage.

Good luck,

Keith

1st make sure your clutch is fully releasing.

If it's diffuclt to shift I would change oil in transaxle.
then make sure there isn't a loose connection in the shift rod.
last is open and inspect gear stack and most likely replace 2nd gear synchro and slider.

Assuming you have everything adjusted properly there are some ways to improve the shifting.

Mark the shift-rod where it goes through the bushings. You can then mix epoxy and coat the shift rod to build up the shift-rod. You then sand the epoxy until the shift bushing barely fits a bushing. This helps a lot! You can do a similar thing with the ball and the plastic socket.

The other thing to remember is there are 2 bushings and a spring in the shifter itself. I am not talking about the lockout plate. These are behind/above the lockout plate. I've only been able to find those parts from Porsche, but it's been a while since I ordered them.

Assuming the lockout plate is in good condition, I always use that to set the 2-3 gear.

Put the transmission in 2nd gear. Loosen the gear selector connection to the shift rod. Move the gear selector to the left (toward the driver) until it barely touches the lockout plate. This gives you a "slot" for 2nd/3rd.

For the forward/backward adjustment, move the gear selector all the way forward and all the way back, noting where they stop. Move the gear selector to about 75% forward. This should give you a good forward backward position. You can adjust this to your preference, as long as you can get into both the forward and rear gear.

Tighten it down and then try it out. 2-3 should feel pretty good. You will need to push hard for R-1. And you go far right for 4-5.

Hope this helps.
