Stereo

I have a completely stock '74 1.8 with original radio and speakers. One of the speakers is out.

1. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? Size is an issue.

2. More generally, I'd like to improve the sound in the car without disturbing its originality (no monster anything few/no drilled holes, etc.). Anyone seen a nice setup to achieve this result?

We need a little more volume with the roof off all the time and a little better reception/tonal quality would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any/all feedback.

Henry, Try a search for stereo in this Forum. There are some interesting systems discussed. As you know space is the problem in a 914. Good luck.

KENWOOD KFC5708c these are 5x7 , I have not tried them yet but from what i hear you can trim the top and bottom tabs off the speakers and they fit the original grills pretty well .

Places like Crutchfield will sell 4x6 speakers that will fit in the stock location.

You can improve the stock stereo by installing better speakers, an amp, and a sub. If you want to stay with the stock head unit you'll have to use a speaker-level to low level signal converter. The biggest question usually is where to mount the sub. Inside a center console, the passenger side foot well are popular locations. I've thought that a low profile sub enclosure mounted under the dash might work well too.

I went with Blautpunk 5x7 speakers. I had to trim more than just the tabs to get them to fit. A little of the top of the speaker backing also had to go. I did not touch the actual membrane of the speaker. It's amazing what you can do with aircraft style sheetmetal cutters.

Tonal quality is excellent. I did have to adjust the bass output up a bit. The 5x7's are a huge improvement over the 4x6's.

I also replaced the stock head unit with a Blautpunk MP3/CD unit. It is a beautiful thing to see. And have 150+ song/cd helps with the space limitations of the 914/6.

I do plan to add 2 rear speakers, but I will not be doing any cutting. I am going to place a couple of enclosed speakers in the corners against the rear windscreen.
