FlippI (eye) gear set for 5th?

Is it possible to find a I (eye)gear set for a 914 and is it also possible to flip it and use it as a 5th in a 914 transaxle? .645 to one in 5th would be perfect!

Thanks for your expertise!

I have one for my second gear. I found it in a junk yard loose. So I cannot say what box it came from. My buddy told me it was from a sportomatic but I do not know for sure. I haven't seen another since.

Good luck,

neilca

According to Chuxter's List of 901&915Ratios , the "I" gear could be found in:

901/76, 901/81, 911/81 transmissions.

I don't know what the suffixes are, but all of the 901s were in 911s and 912s from the start (63) up through 1969. The 911 transmission was used in 1970 and 1971 911s, and used the internals of the 901 gearbox but was set up for a pull-type clutch instead of a push-type one.

You might be able to cross-index the transmission types to specific models using Anderson's 911 book. Or maybe even Google.

EDIT:

Oh, yeah. You should be able to flip a 3rd gear (which the I is) and use it as a 5th gear.

Thanks for the Knowledge!

I thought I read were the 3rd gear drive sets have a different tooth angle? I would just have to keep the third gear set individuals together and not mix them with a a gear with a different tooth angle?

You have to use both the gears in the 3rd gear pair. You swap which shaft they're on. The teeth still mesh just fine, but they are spiraled the "wrong way". They will probably experience a little more wear, but anecdotal evidence says that isn't much of a problem even in the long run.
