Rear axle bearing
I read on one of the forums (I'm not sure it was here) that a bearing from a Audi 5000 would fit the reat axle bearing on our 914's.
The author also said the bearing was more stout and would hold up better than the original Porsche OEM. Does anyone know of this or have any experience with it? Unless its in the metalurgy I'm wondering how it could be more HD if the dimensions are the same which we know it would have to be. Tom B. |

news to me, I have not had any premature failures using the stock 914 bearing. I think you have two choices, FAG and SKF for makers of the 914 bearing There may be a quality difference between makers? May Audi uses the better of the two makers for their bearing? As I recall there was a price difference and one vendor told me one was of higher quality, but I forgot which, High Performance House should have that info. give Rich a call 650 364-6234

thats new to me, repacking them, The ones I have always seen in the 914 are sealed bearings, not made for repacking lubed for life (I like the good old days, no "sealed for life", just put a grease nipple on them and they will run for ever if I grease them regularly) at any rate it is not impossible to regrease the sealed ones, but as far as i know they are not removable without damaging the bearing, which would make cleaning and seal removal / install difficult.
how do you go about regreasing yours? do you remove them from the trailing arm? do you use a needle tip on the grease gun and slip it past the seal? I have often wondered how to effectively regrease one of these bearing. |

The stock bearing have lasted over 30 years. Replace them with another set of stock bearings.
I've never heard of greasing sealed bearings.

I have never heard of greasing a sealed being either. If the seal is deformed even for a needle point it would probably leak out. I wouldn't even try. I spun out one night after hitting some gravel/sand on pavement and about eight years later the bearing did fail (I also crushed the inner CV to the point of replacement and the arm was bent). The bearing is sealed and I believe it has a double race as I remember (this was over thirty years ago). The right side bearing is stock and I am the original owner of a 1970 914-6.
