PCA-Chicago Concours
Speaking of yellow "6"es.....
Thought everyone might like to see a couple of pics from the PCA-Chicago concours yesterday. There were about a half-dozen or so 914's either competing or just there for the show, including a '76 2.0 with 28,xxx miles on it. Very nice car. Although it was about 90 degrees, the turnout was pretty good, and I was lucky enough for Bob D. to show up and park next to my '75 1.8 in his "6". BTW Bob's car is UNBELIEVABLE for those who have not seen it. Sounds as good as it looks too. Then.... ANOTHER Canary Yellow 914/6 rumbles in.... Very cool. Neither knew the other was coming, and the two owners had not seen each other for years. I wonder how close the VIN numbers are! ---Chris H. |

Thanks for the pics and the kind words, Chris. Your blue car looks like a real find and that paint is coming nicely back to life.
This concours was proof that we really do have some nice teeners that come out of hiding here in the Chicago area, even on days when its hot enough to get heatstroke just walking out the door.... For all you youngsters out there, there was a time not so long ago when some PCA types used to practically bar 914 owners at the door--the whole NARP thing was in full bloom. The current day attitude is so different it still takes me by surprise sometimes. At this event plenty of folks circled our 914s in the parking lot, and when I was away from my car my 914 t-shirt (thanks Glen!) caused at least 6 or 7 other people to stop me and launch into spontaneous testimonials singing the praises of our little beasts. Pretty amazing. Made for a nice ride home.

Hey Bob and Chris!
It was nice to meet you guys! I just couldn't bring myself to park my rather sorry 'teen next to those three beautifull machines! Heh Could you please explain the NARP thing to us youngsters? I have an idea what your going to say, but I'm honestly a 914 noob that jumped inthis head (heart really) first! So I'm still learning a lot about this car that I've just fallen so in love with... Next show I'll have my car cleaned up and ready for some snapshots though!

Ask ol' JPIII about NARP... You'll get an earful!
NARP == Not A Real Porsche. Since the 914-4s were built at Karmann, and had VW motors, and were sold as VW-Porsches elsewhere in the world, some of the Porsche Club folks (see "whine and cheese set thereof") didn't want to allow 914 owners into the club. They very conveniently forgot that Porsche Number 1 was a mid-engine'd car with a Volkswagen motor and wasn't built at Stuttgart... Happily, that attitude is now (mostly) a thing of the past. I still get some crap from my 911-driving friends now and then, but it's friendly teasing. I just tell them that they're jealous--their engines, after all, are only in the second-best location! ![]() --DD

Yeah, that's about what I figured. I had heard something about
the 914 not being a real Porsche, and even some Ford guys told me that when I told them I picked up a 914. Heh, and I passed on a 944 Turbo and got this instead! Go me! Speaking of picking on the 'Teens... "Hey Raven, I like your car....but which end is the front?" "Oh yeah, that's why I put the spoiler on the back" Or...I was *was* thinking about putting a bumper sticker on my 914 that said "My Other Car is a Porsche", but I think too many people would take that the wrong way. LOL

...I was thinking of getting a license plate frame for my 914 that said "My other car is a Honda".
![]() I've also heard the car called "The Porsche Picnic Basket: A lid on each end, and a handle in the middle!" --DD

Well, as further proof that the NARP thing is gone or at least minimized, I notice both my 914-6 and Jim Smolka's excellent 914 2.0 are featured in "photos of the month" on the PCA website:
http://www.pca.org/news/potm.html Love that pic, Jim. If I still windsurfed I'd be giving you a call to see how you got all that stuff on the roof of a 914!

76 914
Regarding the 76 914 2.0 in maluga - A few years back I came to an agreed price with the owner of that car. Purchased my non-refundable airfare and only to have him back out on the sale at the last moment. He could of had the decency to refund my tickets at least. Next event give him my regards.

That's a bummer Tod. Sorry to hear that.
Not sure if it's the same owner or not, so I better not give him the "you're #1" salute for you. This guy gave me the impression he hadn't owned it for too long. He said he bought it from the original owner, who he described as a little eccentric. Still stinks though.

Interesting. Well hey, I am kind of partial to the '75 anyway. How about some pics of that thing?
