valve job question

i am rebuilding the heads on my '73 1.7 and had a question about valve stem seals. when i disassembled the heads there were no stem seals and the gasket set didnt have them. Is there a recommended update or should I put it back together without any seals in place. I have never rebuilt an engine without stem seals so was hoping to get some advice.

thanks

No valve seals. There is an "oil deflector" ring on the valve stem but all the engines I had never used them.

The seals are shown in the factory manual, but as far as I can tell were not actually installed in a 914 engine.

Additionally, don't use the gaskets sealing the cylinder heads to the gaskets. Lap the two surfaces together.
