I have seen a 914/6 with a sportomatic,I believe that it ended up with George Hussey of Automobile Atlanta.
I saw the car in Sacramento in the early 90s and they were asking 20k

the sportomatic isn't an automatic transmission
it's a manual transmission with automatic clutch and torque converter ...

btw - the article says 5 cars were built, that's definitely wrong; at least 16 914-6 Sportomatic were built

The best reference I have seen is that 21 were built for model year 1970, and 5 for 1971.

The Sporto is a kind of auto-manual hybrid. You had to work the gears yourself, but there was a torque converter between the engine and transmission rather than a clutch. So there wasn't a third pedal for your left foot to work, but you still had to move the lever to change gears.

No full automatic transmission was put in by the factory.

People have talked about a couple of different options over the years to fit an auto; the only one that comes to mind now that ran was one that used an FWD Audi transaxle. It definitely required some custom work to fit, but it evidently worked reasonably well. (For an old slushbox.)

of course there was a clutch, too !
but it was actuated by a servo motor, contected to a vacuum reservoir - actuated by an electric switch at the gearstick ...

I may have the years swapped. I do remember 21 in 1 year and 5 in the other. The sources that say five only seem to only have found about the one year that only had five.

True about there being a clutch mechanism, but what I was trying to emphasize was the lack of any direct control over it--the lack of the clutch pedal.

And thanks for keeping me honest, Gustl!
