If your visors are intact & the vinyl is still soft you can repair them. I bought a pair on e-bay that had the disintegrating inner foam problem. I cut them open along the seam closest to the windshield & fished the wire frame out. I used the wire frame for a template to cut out two layers of 3/8" closed cell foam. Contact cement the two layers of foam around the edges w/ the wire frame sandwiched in the middle. Fish the cover back over the frame & foam. There is enough extra vinyl to overlap the seam and superglue it back together. You can run strips of masking tape 1/16" on either side of the seam. Apply a small bead of black RTV silicon that you smooth w/ your finger. Remove the tape after a couple of minutes and you are done. Good as new, or as close as I could get. Mark 73 2.0

Another idea -- the PO of my car fabricated some pretty cool visors in fiberglass. Apparently he just layed some mat & resin over a cardboard or plywood core, using the stock wire "frame" and hardware. Then painted them semigloss black.

The PO of my teener made hardboard visors - i got rid of them quick - they looked as though they could take your nose off in an accident. (not that i'm planning an accident...)

I actually never really got the point of sunvisors. They block long-range (horizon) view and just kinda bug me. I wear sunglasses every daylight moment I'm outdoors or in the car anyway.

Phil & every one else! I just got a responce from Vinyl Specialties , I can't believe it They said $ 57.00, no sh-t!!!!!!!!!! I emailed them to clarify , whether that included the pocket on the drivers side and the vanity flap on the passenger side( they would need my mirror probably) and if it was for one or two. Phil PLEASE post pictures of yours & what it cost you. Ever if it is $100.00 each with everything . That $400.00 less than A.A.s price , and our host wants $275. oo for one and doesn't have the other. I,ll let you all know what there ans. is. DAVE

I haven't tried this yet but I have seen the post product and it looks great. Remove the bad foam from inside the visor by any nondestructive means you can. Use a shop vac and make sure you have 99% of the bad foam out.... Buy a can of foam sealer from Lowes (the kind that gets real hard). Put the visor in the sun to soften the vinyl up some. Spray the foam into the hole you used to remove the old foam from the visor. Once you have the visor filled put the visor between two sheets of plywood and with some weights apply pressure. Let this sit for an hour or so. Finish off/clean up the over flow and you now have final product. It should be a good looking visor. If this doesn't work you can always buy a new set

Okey, guys, here is a pic of the visors I had made at a local shop. Cost me $60.00. No mirror or pocket. It was only after I had mine made that I found the autosunvisors site. Phil http://images.prosperpoint.com/1070/54506-88.jpg

Thanks for posting the link to a past thread. It sounds like the foam idea has been tried and with no luck. I guess the search is still on for a good cheap ($) fix for the 30year old visors. Kerry

I was away for several days and wanted to follow up on this topic. Plil, Thanks for the photo. Barber Dave, Please let us know the results. I'd spring for $64 apiece if the results are good. I can't do $600 though! Mike Last edited by maf 914; 03-17-2003 at 09:26 AM..

$64.00 is a pretty good price. the materials are all available locally and easily found near any big city. u can buy the vinyl, new foam and make the insert out of masonite. use the old one for pattern. have the domesticated woman sew it up. vinyl is easy to cut and u can use the rest of what you bought for a new dash cover, sail panels or many other trim pieces. there is an upolstry supply house on bascom in san jose that sells a yard of nice black vinyl for about $6-7.00. they have all kinds of foam and leather products. the only hard part is the sewing but if you got it all ready to sew with allowances for seams then if you took it to a seamstress you should get a good deal.in san jose they would charge about at least a $100. because labor is high. jc
