any experience w/ the "new" 96mm slip-ins ?
I recently got a rebuild kit from Stephens. Everything looks great and was very reasonably priced. My hesitancy is with the 96mm slip-in P's & c's they sent. The gentleman on the phone assured me that they were of much higher quality than the 96 slipins of the past and that they hadn't had any problems w/ blowby-warpage etc. Before I install these on my motor I was hoping to get some feedback from anyone who has tried these recently. The car will not be driven "aggresively" I'm building the motor to put in a VW type3 ( which is driven about 500-1000 miles per year ). I wouldn't mind sending them back and upgrading to a "machine - in" set of P's & c's I was just trying to keep the cost down.

As far as I know there are no "machine-in" 96's. In this month's Hot VW's (the vintage issue) there is a full page ad for European Parts (I think that was the name). I remember their ad from VW & Porsche magazine a while back - but they are advertising 96mm pistons along with a bunch of other type 4 parts. At least some of their pistons were J&E as I recall. You might give them a try. They're big type 4 guys.
