i remember reading something (maybe in bruce andersons book) about 2.4 L being the limit of the displacement without an external oil cooler. the 2.7 had a "trombone" loop cooler as i recall and my 83 sc has the same. many ads for 6's for sale say E specs. i'd say to match your motor to driving style and comfort, that is, high revving engine not good for commuting but good for racing. there is a GT oil cooler if you go greater displacement.

Hi there. No, the external cooler for 1974-77 was an option on the motor, and wasn't required. My 2.7S motor runs pretty cool in my engine compartment...

My 3.0 ran OK around town, once I got on the highway for more than an hour it started creeping up into "oh no" range, (240F).
Installed a cooler in the trunk with a fan thermostatically controlled and the problem is now history. |

My modified 2.7 needed a front cooler to stay rational (<250 degrees) if I played with it, but now with a front cooler I can play for 30 minute track sessions with no problems.
