914-6 What to look for?

I hope to soon have the opportunity to purchase a 914-6 that has been in the garage for 15 years. Most of my recent experience has been with 911s. I have owned 914s in the past (over 25 years ago) and enjoyed them.
I seek advice as to what to look for on this car when I get to see it. I am well aware of the normal rust areas associated the these cars. Is there anything unique about the 6es
that I should look for?
Thanks in advance for your input!
Scott

The key is on the dash, three speed wiper motor, hand throttle in front of the gearshift are three unique things that jump out at me.
How are you going to use it?
Is this a numbers matching car?
How modified is it?
Find the rust,it's there.
Above all,have fun.
Oh yeah, there is a hook on the left rear suspension console for the oil line.

In addition, look for proper /6 serial number starting with 914...check the right headlight bucket and the top of the right fender and make sure the serial numbers match. If you are so inclined there is a number on the bottom of the dash, written in some sort of marker that should match the trunk number, located in the right rear of the trunk.

What they all said and then post some darn pictures of that car - lots of pictures so we can all see how blessed you are or how much work you will have ahead of you. Welcome to the madness - with a Six it is just a little more costly.

I would also call PCNA and give them the VIN and see if they can give you any info over the phone re equipment, color, numbers, etc.

Thanks for the info!
This is friend of a friend thing so I hope to get it worked out.
I'm told the car has not left the garage in 15 years! What a waste!

Note that the few 1972 model year 914-6es had the ignition lock on the steering column, just like the 914-4s.

The 914-6 mounted the motor to the firewall, so the "pods" that hang down under the engine bay (that the -4 motor mount bar bolts up to) are not present.

They still rust in the same places as the four-cylinder cars. In general, the three main things to look for are: Rust, rust, and rust.

There are three things that are not unique to the /6 but you should look for them anyways:

1. Rust
2. Rust
3. Even more Rust

If you can't find 1, 2 or 3, look harder. I can guarantee you you'll find at least one of the three.

Except for that one damn silver car you went and looked at about 6 years ago, the time capsule (owners name was Tom, I think?). Had a chance to buy that car and didn't, and still kick myself for not having done so. I don't think there was any rust on that car, and I'm sure it stands more or less alone for that reason.

So I got over to see the car today.
Guess what I found!

Yep all three, rust , rust and rust.

The car is savable and a genuine "6" with the OE 2.0.
so I made him a reasonable offer and will wait to see if he really will sell.

The only picture I could take was with my phone so it'll take me a while to get it posted here.

Thanks again to all who posted with advice!

Yes, that one was an exception. The owner was Tom van Overbeek, father of Johannes van Overbeek.

Turns out both of them are 914 guys and Johannes learned to race in a 914.
