Fuel Filter Direction?

I have carbs & the mechanical fuel pump. But my question is do I install the low pressure fuel filter after or before the fuel pump & which direction does the filter go? I'm using the common VW bug filters.

The fuel filter should always go BEFORE the fuel pump. This is very important for the electric fuel pumps. Maybe not so critical for the mechanical varity but, grit in the fuel from a dirty tank will eat up the fuel pump fairly quick. As for the direction, every filter I have seen has had an arrow printed or stamped on it indicating the direction of fuel flow. If there is no indication then I would guess that it does not matter.
