how can you tell if the syncro is bad by looking at it?

Take the synchro and put it into the dog teeth. If it stays on it's own, it's good. If it immediately springs out or is so loose it won't stay in on it's own, it's bad.

If it springs out on it own on one side, but not the other, it can be reused. The side that "sticks" into the dog teeth is the good side and should be positioned "outwards".
