Value of 72 1.7 FI engine running condition?
Hey folks,
I bought a rusty hunk of a donor car because I needed the transmission, but it was a running and driving 1.7 with original FI. I'm going to drop the engine / trans, swap the trans with my 73 2.0. My question is how much do you think a FI 1.7 is worth? I am trying to decide if I should sell it or hold on to the engine just in case I get a car with a dead engine in the future. Thanks, Ron |

i just finished rebuilding a 1.7 and if i take an honest accounting of it, the cost was somewhere between $1500-2000, not including labor. i see rebuildable hulks for 300-500 so if yours can be started for a potential buyer it might be worth 700-800. good luck

no just kidding. Locallity can make a big difference in price, sell in a metro calfornia area where many 914's still roam, and you can sell it for more, than if you are selling from rural Alaska. Shipping cost can kill a deal, and if they can't pick up, they can't see before they buy, which could work either up of down on the price depending on how good/bad she looks. If they can hear and see, and drive it in a car, it is in my opinion worth double than if it is sitting on the floor. In a metro California market, hear it run deal, with test drive, no shipping involved, maybe get $1200 for a basic 1.7if she is average wear looking but clean looking, knock off several $100 each if the engine tin is all bent and rusty, ratty FI harness, etc... It may take a while to sell. If you offered it for $500 probably sell right away if she runs without any horrible smoking, noises or roughness. good deal for buyer. If your in the middle of no where, you may have to pay someone to take it. If you got to sell right away, you may have to settle for less, if you can wait till someone really needs one, you may not have to negociate down so much. as a core motor, which I assume is any used motor that is sold sitting on the floor is (unless documented) a 1.7 might be worth a few $100, becuase then it is a gamble whether it is any good or not, if she needs work or not, If the engine case is already lined bored twice over, the case is worth scrap, until someone starts to make third over main bearings. (I assume one day someone will make them). If the case is stamped +.01 or .02 twice on top, then I know it has been bored twice, lack of stamp does not tell me if it was bored or not. many shops stamp cases, but not all shops that do the line bore stamp the case. Stamp is often near the seam on top usually. so there you are, the sky is the limit, All these factors, appearance, ability to test, geographical location and, timing are all going to influence the price. $0 to $1200 is a safe range assuming these factors. If things align just perfect, engine is of a highest quality of appearance (fresh painted tin, new hoses, wires, very clean, tuned well for test drive, recipts and documantation to prove low miles on build, desperate buyer, the price may exceed the high number by more than 200%.($3000+).
