				Engine 6420164

Can anyone help identifying this motor I have The case number is 6420164 and I see at p914.com that it is a 1972 case but my serial number does not show up in the list. The 72 cases all have a "4" after the 642 Porsche 914 914-6 and 916 Engine Specs and Performance Numbers @ P914 My motor has 84mm bore cylinders on it (see pic). So I'm assuming this makes it a 2.4. In a thread from a while back there was a similar case number. I don't think it was confirmed as a 2.4 Engine info? #6420233 914/6 Did they ever sell 2.4 914/6? Or was it bored out later? I understand Porsche only made a handful of 916 so I'm assuming with a number that high it is not one those engines. Thanks

I believe the P914.com is incorrect where it documents the 72 914-6 engine serial numbers. For 1972 it should be 6420001 - 6420260. Some documentation shows the highest number as 6420270. Using these numbers, your engine case falls neatly within this range as a 1972 2 liter 6. All factory original 914-6's street cars were delivered with 2.0 liter 110 DIN HP engines. As soon as anyone uses words like "all" or "last" and "only", someone will come up with an exception or special ordered factory one-off to discredit someone's claim. However, it is safe to claim that your engine case as stated above. Last edited by smg911; 02-10-2013 at 06:19 AM.. | ||

Because the 914-6 was basically detuned with a '69 911t heart it has been a very common practice over the years to upgrade and improve them to a specification more fitting to such a wonderful chassis. While likely not originally delivered as a 2.4l, the case is the key piece of a 914-6 engine and its value. If it was built properly you have a nice little engine there.

Martijn, smg911 is completely correct in his statements, and your case was originally a 2.0L engine in a 914/6. I don't know what was distracting the developer of our VIN page when he entered those numbers, but I have corrected the entries and will beat him severely when I have the opportunity. Really, though, thanks for bringing that error to our attention. I'm amazed that nobody called us on that during the 6+ years it's been there. -Steve www.P914.com Forum914.com 1974 914 2.0 Sunflower Yellow Last edited by Steve Snyder; 02-10-2013 at 03:29 PM..
