Charcoal filter connections?

Just out of curiosity, how much air is supposed to be *spewing* out of the hose connections on the fan housing.

I've got the engine mounted charcoal filter but at idle not much air is coming out of the connections right off the fan housing. I guess I was expecting a stream of air.

RustyWa,

I'm not completely clear on what you're asking, but I'll take a stab at it.

There are three connections to the charcoal filter. One is a very small dia (4.5mm) which is a return vapor line to the fuel tank. The larger 12mm line next to this connects to the air box on the passenger side. The 12mm line on the opposite side of the filter goes over to the sheet metal on the driver side next to piston #2.

This latter one would have air flow from the cooling fan, as its simply picking up air flow being forced under the sheet metal and over the cylinders. At idle there will not be much pressure as the fan is not turning that fast. As RPMs increase, so will the pressure through this hose.

Hope this helps.

3D914, I think you have it backwards. The hoses from end of the charcoal cannister with two connections go to the: 1) expansion tank on the upper part of the fuel tank, and 2) the fan housing on the passenger side to the right of the dizzy. The hose from the single connection on the other end of the cannister goes to the air cleaner assembly. See the diagram on p. 58 in the Haynes manual.

mejulihn,

You're perhaps right in the case of a front-mounted charcoal filter on a 1.7 engine, but the 2.0 liters have a different config. Look at page 57 - fig 2.56 Connection 'b' is the fuel tank vent (charcoal filter).

If you check the Dave Darling hose diagram for the 2.0 it is clarified some there, although the charcoal filter is not shown. I completed mine from an additional hose diagram from AA which showed the filter and connections.

Besides the only hose connections on the fan housing on a 2.0 is the triple T valve (drivers side near thermostat cable), and none of those hoses actually connect to the fan housing itself. One goes to the passenger side vent for the head, the other to the driver side vent for the head, and the third goes to the air cleaner box on the drivers side.

Sorry I can't find the post for Daves diagram.

Enjoy,

Yea my question was about the actual amount of air flow coming out of the connections to the charcoal canister. I didn't feel anything at idle, but when I rev'd it up a little I started to feel the air flow.

If that's normal, then I'm fine. Thanks.
