paint code
Just wondering if anyone out there has had this problem. I went to my local parts supplier and asked for info on paint, mainly if they could get me a quart of this paint code 8310, L97P. The books they had didn't go back that far and they called the paint company to see if it was available. Guess what, Sherwin Williams doesn't make a color even close. Apparently it is a one year, one make, one model color. So my question is this. Does anyone outhere know who makes this paint yet? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

L97P is Metallic Green. It was only available for 1970. That same color was used on VWs coming out of the Karmann plant the same year. VW called it Green Poly. You can see color chips as well as order it here:

It's worth the effort to find the correct color for your car. Metallic Green is one of my all-time favorite 914 colors. Perry Kiehl has/had a 914-6 in that color and it was just gorgeous.

This company, PaintScratch.com, also lists your color (L97P). Their link is:
www.paintscratch.com Your color isn't listed for any Porsche, as far as I know, but it IS found under Volkwagen, circa 197 0. Here is a link to that listing: http://www.paintscratch.com/cgi-bin/makepaint.cgi I ordered some touch-up paint from them for my '75 914 (L97B Ancona Metallic). Apparently they mix to order, and it looks pretty close. I haven't applied the paint yet, though. Dan |

Sorry, the second link I included to the specific paint listing for your color code doesn't work. You have to go to their website and query for your color.

Were there custom colours? My 72 is a darker blue than the one's shown in the paint chips?

Yes. There was the option of ordering a car in a custom color every year. All you had to do was pay for it, and Porsche was glad to take your money. For the 1972 model year, there were two (2) standard blues available. One was Adriatic Blue (L50E) and the other was Gemini Blue (L96E). The best way to tell what color your car is (or was) is to check the Karmann plate inside the driver's door by the hinges. If the color code is, or starts with "89", you've got a custom color. |
