Carbon on exhaust valve spring

Hello all,I have ventured into my first valve adjustment with my newly purchased 75 2.0 and have found some dis heartening sights. As I look at the #1 exhaust valve there seems to be some carbon build up on the valve spring itself, the reason I have dove into this so soon is#1 I never trust anyone's work (previous owners) and #2 I have had some intermittent tapping from that side of the motor. It seems to come and go mostly at idle and decreases with rpm. Your thought's are appreciated and I hope the clearances were just too tight holding the valve open. I will be doing the adjustment tonight to factory spec. Thanks again........Ben P.S. I have also just run a can of BG fuel system cleaner through if they may be related.

That was part of my suspicions,I did a valve adjust last night and it did not quiet that valve. The adjusters were all very pitted so it looks like I will be planning a motor drop in the near future to rebuild at least that head and replace all the adjusters. Does anyone have a good spare they would part with so I could have it refinished ready to install to limit down time ?(this is my current daily driver). I was planning on driving it through the summer while saving for another daily driver.I will buy a set if anyone doesn't want to separate .......Thanks, Ben
