'75 914 1.8 Emissions Fail in AZ - Nuts!
I have been failing my AZ emissions on numerous occasions with my 1.8, and am at whits end, as I have tried everything I can think of and as has been recommended. Does anybody else have regular emissions issues with a 1.8? This is my first 914 that wasn't a 2.0.

Get collector car insurance and you can get a 5-year sticker in AZ for $110...no more emission tests. That's what I did.

I have my 914 with collector car insurance. But, with your injector system which
is K jectronic, you should pass. There are a couple of things you should make sure of. There is an air mixture screw on the 1.8 exclusively for emissions. Look in your manuel. Do you have the charcoal canister hooked up. Is the o-ring sealing the oil cap. DO NOT USE PREMIUM GAS! Use regular unleaded and to 10 gallons add 1.5 quarts of ethyl alcohol. |

The 1.8 liter used L-jetronic EFI, not the K-jetronic system as used on the 74-82 911s.
I agree that regular-grade fuel should work; that's what the engine was designed for. But I do not recommend putting ethanol in the gas--most places already have ethanol, and it's not that great for the fuel system. What emissions levels are too high? There are a lot of way to fail emissions, and far fewer to pass them. Your NOx numbers could be too high, your idle RPM could be too high, the HC numbers could be too high, the timing could be off, and on and on. Telling us what the readings are, or at least what the failure mode is, can help us give you an idea of what might be causing it. --DD

Thanks for the correction, yes L- jetronic. There is an emissions screw on I
believe the brain box for emissions. Yes most fuels already have ethanol, but this is an old trick to get through emissions. By bumping up the ethanol content slightly, the engine will run slightly hotter. That small amount of ethanol is not going to cause any harm. |

The mid-71 and later D-jet ECU has a knob on it to adjust idle mixture, I do not think the L-jet one does. L-jet does have a screw in the air flow meter that can tweak the idle mixture a little bit--it allows air to bypass the meter, leaning the mixture out, much like an air leak.
Anyway, this is all shooting in the dark until we hear what kind of failure is happening. --DD

I cut in a flanged cat on 2.0, can't pass without it. Remove afterwards.

Piech,
It would be helpful to know just where you're failing, but I recall having to regular swap out my standard BP5E plugs with hotter BP6E's to aid passing AZ emissions.

I live in Kalifornia and emissions tests kick my A$$ every time. I found this website and plan on adding acetone to my fuel and see what happens....
Article:Truth About Acetone and Ethanol - PESWiki Maybe of help to you too, different treatment for different fails. I went through AZ this summer and all of those power plant coal trains, why do they worry about emissions for? |

I am having similar issues passing AZ emissions. I don't have the charcoal canister installed, and am in the middle of reinstall project, but not doing great understanding where all hoses connect. Anybody have pics of hoses installed they can share? The diagrams aren't so helpful.
I tried the 'collector car' status, but don't have a garage and got booted for coverage by the agent. |

In a 75, the canister would be back in the engine bay. Possibly hanging off of the battery tray.
The hoses connect as follows: There are two larger hoses, one to each end of the canister. One of them connects to the air cleaner, and the other to a fitting on the engine tin or on the fan shroud itself. Usually on the right side, but sometimes on the left. The hose that goes to the air cleaner is on the same end of the canister as the smaller fitting described below. There is a smaller fitting on one end of the canister. That takes a hose that connects to a metal line that runs through the center tunnel. The front of that metal line winds up connecting to a hose running to the expansion tank that sits on top of the fuel tank, sort of wrapped around the filler neck. I know it's not pictures, but I hope it helps. --DD
