well...you are "supposed" to capture the freon inside the system so that it does not escape into the atmospere...this can only be done by a shop....
other than that, it should be no problem....take pictures to help you reinstall it....

This brings up a good point, since I will be adding A/C soon..
If one was replacing the refrigerant lines, would it be wise to add some length to the lines to allow the compressor to be unbolted and set a side? Just an idea Best of luck

Kevin,
You shuld be able to disconnect the compressor at one of the brackets and support it while the engine is dropped. If you have the VPC system, it has a swing bracket that pivots on a long bolt. Loosen whatever belt adjustments you have, then use two wrenches to loosen the nut on this bolt. The bolt should slide toward the back of the engine. This will free up the compressor. Just be sure to tie it off with some wire or heavy-duty plastic ties temporarily. If you have the mounting system for the DPD version, you'll have to remove the compressor bia the secondary mounting plate. It has bolts that are accessable from the bottom and outside the compressor. There is also an adjustment bolt at the top near the fan housing, but I can't tell if this needs to come out or not. Good luck,

thanks gerard,
i'm totaly in the dark with this ac. i don't intend to reinstall it. when i collect all the bits and pieces i'll sell it as a complete deal. i don't need it where i live, i just want to make sure that i don't ruin something during removal. i'll take plenty of digital pictures showing removal for the next owner. kevin |

Kevin,
As an additional selling aid for the AC you might consider spending an extra $15 and buy the AC installation manual from Automobile Atlanta. It will be an invaluable aid to anyone wanting to put one of these in their 914 whether it had air originally or not. It has installation guide, parts list for both systems, etc. Just a thought.

If you are removing the AC permanently you can leave the compressor attached to the engine and the drop will go per the manuals. Just remember to disconnect the hoses and wiring at the compressor. As stated above the eco-friendly approach is to have the system vacated by an AC shop. I wonder if they charge you if you give them the freon. For the price they charge for an R12 refill they should pay you for it!
