Plastic Headlight Rings

My questions seem to come in two's what can I say?! I have White Plastic Hedlight finishing rings on my '72. Were their some cars that came with black?

I think that every car after 72 had black ones. Check Brett Johnson's "Authenticity Guide" book. Yes, Pelican sells it.

I know my 74s both had black ones.

Should this plastic headlight rings that are from ´75 be painted black or not ?
There seems to be some thin paint on them that are peeling of.

I don't think they were painted. I believe the early ones were molded from white plastic, and the later ones were molded from black plastic.

It would not be unheard of for someone to paint a black one with black paint to freshen it up, or to paint a white one to make it "look right" in a later car.

My '70 had black ones, not painted, but I can't say they were original. Probably weren't. That said, if I had white ones I'd dye'em black just because, unless the car was white!

This post has perfect timing for me--- I just took mine off because they were dirty-

The covers on my 1973 1.7 appear to be white but look beige. I suppose that these are probably discolored from age. For reference I added this picture from the car's showroom brochure.

Depended on what color the car was, according to the guy I got my car from. He has been working on them since the 1980's
