Take a Look

Hi all, I have put a new clutch and clutch cable on my 73 1.7. I am now trying to get my shift linkage straightened out. I am wondering if the shaft looks correct to you guys. The car is in neutral. Also the cable as you can see is screwed down all the way. I know the stick adjustment is off I just want to know if anything jumps out at you. I haven't done any adjustments yet. This is how it shifts now. It will go into 1st if I go real slow in putting it there,, and the clutch engages about a 1/4 to 1/2 off the floor closer to 1/4. I can also get 3rd and 4th the same way. For reverse I shut the car off put it in reverse and start it up same result about 1/4 off the floor. Last thing it feels real spongy trying to go into gear. No grinding in the forward gears but can't even get close in reverse, without shutting the car off. I'm trying to get Redbeards shifter adjustment page but his site has been down a long time. (he's looking I have my Haynes manual and numerous articles from here. I was just wondering what you'all think.

Thanks
DK

Red-beard's site can be found on the Internet Wayback Machine here: pb914

Doctor Evil hangs out mostly on the 914world BBS, but sometimes shows up around here too. He knows a lot about the transmissions as well.

Looks to me like the linkage is in general OK. Could be off in some specifics.

Sounds like the clutch is not releasing all the way. Looks like you have a nut on the wrong side of the clevis on the end of the clutch cable, too. Remove that and you should get more threaded area to tighten the cable. Double-nut the end of the cable to keep the adjustment from backing off; I have found that Nyloc nuts don't lock well enough over the long haul for that. You may need an extra spacer between the two nuts and the metal clevis; many people do.

I think the first step is getting rid of that extra nut on the cable, and then hooking the cable back up again and adjusting the clutch correctly.

Just an update Dave. For starters I took the nut off put it on the other end and tightened it to where the threads stop and that seemed to do the trick about 3/8 to a 1/2 inch. I'm always amazed how a slight adjustment can make such a big difference. She shifts real easy now I don't think I'll need much more of an adjustment in the shifter, if any.
Thanks again Dave
Your like a big bottle of aspirin
