headlight surrounds

I seem to remember reading that only 914-6's came with white headlight surrounds (caps) and that 914-4 came with black. I have seen many 4 bangers with white ones, however. Does anyone know for sure?

All of them were white up through... Rats, I forget the year. Possibly 72? There was a thread (that started long ago!) that was bumped up in the not too distant past about this.
