vacuum hoses/smog test
I have a 1975 914, 1.8l, L-jet. There are two vacuum hoses coming from the distributor. Where should the opposite ends of these hoses be connected? The car runs pretty well but it doesn't pass smog at low rpms. The smog guys don't know anything about 914s and just tell me to come back when it's fixed. Any ideas? The engine has a recent rebuild with a big bore kit. Could this be part of the problem? CA smog is a b**** to pass but I am determined! Thanks.

They come from the throttle body.
There should be at least one fitting on the throttle body. If there is only one, it connects to the distributor fitting that points TOWARD the distributor body. If there are two fittings on the TB, then they hook up to both fittings on the distributor dashpot. If there is only one fitting, either run the other hose down under the manifold and don't connect it to anything, or 'T' it into another hose. (The smog cops hate unhooked hoses.) The best bet would be a hose that connects before the throttle plate, but if there isn't one small enough to get the 'T fitting in, the other distributor hose will do in a pinch. I will try to send you Pete Klager's diagram of his 75 1.8 when I get to work... (I don't have it here at home with me yet.) --DD |
