factory special colors chart / brochure

Hi, all. I'm new here. I don't have a car yet, but I'm working on that! I found Pelican while doing my pre-purchase homework. What a vault of knowledge you guys are!

I saw some posts regarding true paint colors a while back. This item at ebay might be interesting to some of you who are interested in color authenticity!

I've got a 1974 color book that I picked up at the Literature swap meet in LA a couple of years ago. Pretty nifty--has both 911 and 914 color samples. It looks as if the actual paint has been applied to the paper--and they applied it in the shape of the sillhouette of the car!

1974 color??

Hey Dave,
can you tell me the correct name then for the 1974, medium metallic blue?
I don't have the paint code with me, I am in the office and my cars are 60 miles away. I hate that!

Randy -

Dave isn't awake yet, So I thought I'd jump in.

For the 1974 model year there were only two blues available in metallic. They were:

Alaska Blue Metallic (L96B)

Marathon Blue Metallic (L96M)

914 brochures

I purchased a set of brochures and paint chip sets
for a 1973 model 914 from a guy name Walter Mittey in NY. He advertises in Hemmings. Very helpfull items I must say. The chip set also includes the available colors for 911's. He has a ton of various items like this for most year Porsche's.
Reasonably priced from what I recall.

Pauls color's turned out really dark. The Alaska blue looks like the medium metalic blue that you use to see on the 85 Audi Coupes. Very nice color.
The other one appears to be more silver than blue. One in that color just sold on ebay for like 16K and change. Think I still have the link if you want it.

Try that link above - the color samples are close with the exception of the metalics - but look at the car photos for a better idea.

LOL! Actually, at 6:50 I was awake, just not on the board yet. I was answering direct e-mail.

Yup, Alaska Blue Metallic. Just like my old 1.8, and just like the car that was cut up in B's shop. (See "trunk rust (sorta)" post.)

Dave,

You're post about color chips in the shape of car outlines jogged the old memory. I remember those. I think I have one in my collection of old 914 brochures, but I can't remember where they are! LOL
