Odometer/Trip Milage removal

Here's a question to which I know there's a simple answer but I haven't found it... my speedometer works but neither the odometer nor trip milage work. I understand how to remove the unit from the dash but cannot remove the reset know and cable. I see a thread/nut attaching it to the dash but it appears the know must be removed first. I cannot find a set screw on the knurled knob. Does it unscrew from the shaft or am I overlooking a set screw?

There is a very small set screw in the knurled knob, ours was in the back and I had to use a small mirror to see it. Since the knob is black and the set screw is black and indented into the knob it is had to find. It sounds like someone tried to reset the trip odometer with the car moving, which causes the grear that drives those parts to strip out.

Oh great, NOW you tell me. I did this YESTERDAY! :-(

Hmmn. I do have a spare speedo... guess I oughta try it, but on the other hand, the one that's in the car had been adjusted to my 195/60's. Can this damage be repaired by a good speedo shop?

Thank you John. It must be small! -grin- I've felt and felt and never could feel any indentation.. time for the mirror! It may also be time for a rebuilt speedo but I'd still have to get that cable loose. The speedometer works but I've noted the odometer never changes.

Peter, don't worry too much about it. It seems that the reset-while-moving only puts extra stress on the gear, it does not necessarily strip it instantly.

If your odometer is now broken, take it to a speedo shop and have it fixed or fit it yourself. Wayne has an article on this site, and I have an article on the 914 Fan Page http://www.914fan.net .

If your odometer isn't broken, don't worry about it. Just don't reset it while the car is moving any more.
