Balanced Fan???

Hi guys,
I was cleaning parts for reassembly of my newly rebuilt 2L and unbolted the alternator pulley off of the fan before I noticed that it had a couple balancing weights crimped into the edge of it. As near as I can figure out from the "tracks" on the mating surfaces the weight is clocked to approximately the same position as the dowel hole in the mounting flange surface. Anyone with experience out there on this?
Leon

Well, it does need to be balanced.... Yes, they are there on purpose, if that's what you were asking.

I understand that the weight is there to balance the assembly. What I am asking is if there is a consistant amount that the fans are out of balance without the alternator pulley on them, and if there a standard correct position for the weight to be placed. I am trying to get confirmation that I have it in the right place, as I have no way to rebalance it up here in the North land.

I don't believe there is any one place that the fans tend to be out of balance. Hopefully you remember which way the pulley came off, or have some markings that you can use to put it back the way it was. Otherwise, you've got a one in four chance of getting it right...

I have 2 of them apart, and another on an engine on a pallet. All 3 have what looks to be the same size piece of steel rod crimped into the pulley. There seems to be a pattern here. I am just trying to avoid pulling another one to figure it out.
