What to pack?

Flying out tomorrow to pick up my new car, (70 1.7L carbs) and I'm packing a small toolbox to take with me (limit 70lbs.) What would you take with you for a 1500 mile cruse home?

I have an assortment of open & box end wrenchs, stubbys, screwdrivers, socket set, digital multimeter, spare fuses, Haynes manual, binder of DL pages from our host and a roll of duck tape.

I keep looking at the box and keep thinking "What else?"

Some ideas:

vice grips
flash light
zip ties
needle nose pliers
hammer or mallet
wire strippers
razor blades

Have a great trip! Nothing like open roads and vintage Porsche!

1500 miles? Are you nuts? Oh wait, I'm the nut that drove 3100 miles in a '73.

I (or rather my friend who actually bought the car) bought a medium sized Sears tool kit in LA. While it's not the right thing to do, we returned it once we got back to Boston. I'd recommend a wisely selected socket set, same with combination wrenches. Also pack a few screwdrivers and pliers. Duct tape, window cleaner wipes, Rain X whips, hand cleaner wipes, and paper towels came in handy too. Bailing wire used to be the classic cars owners friend, may still be.

Spares should also be included. NO ONE sells the right type of fues' when you need them, so carry more than you would ever expect to use, we went through 2 pack or 8 amp fuses. Also a throttle and clutch cable, points, cap, rotor, fuel filter and belts were in our kit.

Good luck!

I wouldn't go outside of walking distance from my house without a spare clutch cable. Would probably try to get in a timing light and dwell meter to go with the spare points.

Bring along a towel to wipe / defog windows, catch water from leeking windows, and to lay on when making repairs.

Let us know how the trip goes!

Be carful and Inspect everything yourself or have the car inspected closely. I almost drove my 914 1000 miles from LA to El Paso through the desert. Luckily at the last minute I paid the $400 to have a truck pick it up. Little did I know that the car would have burnt up to a tiny black crisp if I drove it.

The FI lines were normal Lines and not the high pressure. The Thermostat bellows was shot and the baffels tied closed (No cooling) The batterywas not wired well, and the starter was wired funny. The FI wires were loose and one missing. As well as all sorts of wire problems. The Head temp sensor was shot and a few other small things like that. As well the rear bearings were shot and would have broken half way.

If I would have driven it it would have caught fire and been hurt bad. This is just my expirience. My advice is to make sure everything is where it should be before you take off. I am sure you will be fine, but its nice to be absolutely sure...

Enjoy,

P.S. Buy a fire extingusher, Get a large Flat Head Screwdriver (The 914 owners best friend) and a Cell phone is a must...

>Clutch cable:

I thought that's what the bailing wire and the leather gloves were for?

CAA (AAA up here) has a 7 day wait for new members.

Added almost every thing mentioned except the tork-grip The link to order it seems to be broken.....

Towels & fire extinguisher will be bought there....

Coveralls were added also.

Never thought of the holy water.....wonder if I put it in the windshield washer bottle, will it keep the bugs off better?

Thanks for the ideas,
Bruce

Spare gerbils in case the ones in the engine compartment get tired.

Spark plugs, full set and a point file.

Sunscreen, bug juice, penetrating oil, sillicon spray oil, 2 wooden wedges (They're light), Fix a flat! Ice pick (rust finder!), Box cutter (In case terrorists attack), Paul Hogan or maybe Hulk Hogan - nah, The Crocodile guy to do a play by play of any repairs and to find the snakes etc. as they attack you.

A small canary to sniff out CO leaks.

A big rock. No wait, you can find that along the way.

"Where do we find ourselves now?. G has attacked the fuel system with his swiss army knife. It looks like a viper den in there! Speaking of snakes. Ain't this a beauty? Lets see what old G does when I drop it over his back into the engine compartment...Come on. "

Where is there a 16mm bolt on a German car?

Don't know if it was mentioned yet - latex gloves and and an old sheet to lie on.
