Hesitation under heavy throttle

1974 1.8L fuel injected

I've experienced some hesitation or very short power cuts when accelerating under half to full throttle and at ~3500+ RPM. At one time after a full throttle acceleration it seemed to continue to do this ever few seconds while at highway speeds fro a bit.

I believe the points need adjusting again. I think they are around 27 or 28 degrees on a V8 scale dwell meter so that would put them at ~55 degrees. I believe 48 is correct.

My other thought is that I might be not getting enough fuel to cover the heavy acceleration/high RPM. Partially plugged fuel filter or something like that. It has an aftermarket fuel pump mounted in the front of the car.

These were just the things I could think of and I wanted to bounce them off some to see if anyone had any other ideas or thoughts on mine.

Thanks.

Jerlle-I have owned a fuel injected 1974 1.8 for 12 years. I had the same hesitation when accelerating. I replaced my points with a Perlux electronic ignition system and it took care of my problem. I installed a fuel pressure gauge and my stock fuel pump makes 33 psi. Do you know what pressure your after market fuel pump is making? Good Luck.

It ended up being the points going out of adjustment. It was just weird because I'd never seen that happen before. The thing that lead me to believe it might be the points in the first place was that it would drop idle down to what seemed like almost a stall and then rev it self back to ~900 RPM again after warmed up. It had done that before and it turned out to be the points. I would never had suspected them otherwise.

I do not know the aftermarket pump's pressure as I was not the one who installed it. I'll need to get a pressure gauge from Sears. I am finding many things done by previous owners to fix but it is coming along.

Thanks!

Jerlle, if you have not checked out this unit it is worth a look. (See Link below) It replaces your stock points with a small computer. I never have to adjust timing or dwell again! I run it with my stock coil and it has never been a problem for the last 10 years! Rods914
